Bearly Baking: From Manila to LA

Updated: Oct 29, 2020

Baking has always been a huge part of my family. Back in Manila, our household would be filled with scents of freshly made muffins, brownies, cookies, and cakes, all to be shared with relatives, friends, co-workers, and neighbors. This was a regular tradition every weekend. Me and my mom would experiment with different ingredients, recipes, and mixes, just to find the best versions of our favorite goods. No formal training involved, just two passionate bakers finding what tastes amazing.

No Sunday would be complete without an oven filled with treats. And whether this was a holiday or a regular weekday, my circle could always expect delicious, warm, baked goods perfect for sharing or devouring on their own. We did it well enough to start our own business 15 years ago - where we cater to private companies and even participated in our community's weekend market. Every weekend we would sell some right next to our church. Mom headed our business, and it was called Bernice. Fitting, from my mom's name Bernie and since every food she made, was guaranteed to be delicious and very NICE! (It's not the way how you pronounce NICE, though. It's like Venice.) ;)

After moving to LA, the one way I stayed connected to my family back home was by continuing my family’s weekly tradition. Almost every weekend, I would whip up something new in the kitchen while keeping my mom online to talk about methods and measurements. Meanwhile, thousands of miles away, mom would also continue the tradition, testing out different recipes to share with me the next time we go on a phone call. It’s not always easy considering the time and distance, but the end results are still worth it! Indeed a bond that turned out to be a home-based business here in LA.

Today, our tag team continues to work together to give you the best products we can offer. Our tradition lives on through Bearly Baking LA! We want to share this tradition of passionate experimentation with you. Whether you are just looking for something good to munch on this weekend, or you’re celebrating something big in the next few days, we’d be happy to whisk and whip up something unique for you.
